In week three we looked at our response to the AP Lit prompt we did about the Eagle on Friday. From looking at a example of a essay that scored a nine I learned that I struggle to write a introduction that does not have a three part thesis. I have realized that most of the writing that we do in school is concrete academic writing with a strict structure. As we worked on our peer editing for the comparative essay I learned that you can explain a symbol or meaning without using quotes from the book. I like using quotes to back up what I am saying simply because it only strengthens your point.
When we were working on our creative writing I have decided to write a story about a father who experienced the Gulags in Soviet Russia, and before he dies he wants his son Ivan to write his life story in hopes of convincing people to turn against communism. I have been inspired by the book I am reading One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich but the story is obviously much different. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is a good book because it shows you a aspect of history that people often forget. In fact, most people don't realize that more people died in the Gulags than in the Nazi concentration camps. I have found over the years that I am often inspired to write stories based on other stories, and my experience is reflected in Foster's How to Read Literature Like a Professor.
