The main idea of this week was to help us interpret literature whether it be a poem or a book. I found reading the Eagle with the TP-CASTT to be very helpful in understanding the potential interpretations of the poem. I also found answering the questions for the Eagle helped me break the poem into smaller pieces, and understand why the author used the words they did. I interpreted the Eagle to be referring to a system of government that has fallen from its position of power and influence.
When we got into are summer reading groups I found we all interpreted the meaning of The Fall in different ways. I have learned that there is really no right answer when it comes to interpreting what a piece of literature is about. The comparative essay showed me that authors don't just insert symbols, and that we aren't looking for secret messages. In our groups we were able to bounce ideas off each other about what characters names and other pieces of the books are symbols, and meant to help us understand the author's message. We came up with the fact that in the Reluctant Fundamentalist that Underwood Samson is a symbol of the United States is economic power in the world, and how that power can be abused.
I found the main ideas that we covered in class to be very straightforward, but I would say I need more practice on explicating a poem. I say this because I found it difficult to write the AP Lit prompt for the poem of the week.
