This week we started to work on our This I Believe essays. At first I had a hard time thinking of what my essay would be about. I came up with my topic one night when I was talking to my mom about the project. In order to give us some advice as to how to write our essays we broke up into groups and watched different TED talks. I watched the one called The Danger of a Single Story , and the piece that I took away from it was to get more stories or otherwise you will end up believing in stereotypes. I found her example of her college roommate to be the most interesting because it highlighted how the continent of Africa is made out to be a uncivilized and violent place.
As we were working on writing our essays I found it rather hard to write in a conversational tone, but I eventually figured it out. The conversational tone was more difficult partly because there are no examples of somebody talking the topic that I decided to do. In order to understand how to write in a more conversational tone I went to the This I Believe and watched more examples which helped a lot. I am interested in seeing other people's essays because I wonder what their believe is. I enjoyed this project because me being a very private person it pushed me to share something personal. It was definitely a project that pushed me outside of my comfort zone which is the best part of AP classes.
