In week four are poem of the week was Emily Dickinson's I Felt a Funeral in My Brain. In analyzing the poem I found I took it as she is imagining her own funeral because of the sinking depression that she feels. One of the most important things that I have learned is to be selective, and sticking to own point of interpretation and using evidence to support your viewpoint. This important lesson will help me in responding to the poem of the week prompt that we do. When we looked at the imagery in Dickinson's poem I found it interesting that she doesn't use taste imagery. Our group believed the lack of taste imagery was because sense it is in her mind that it is not possible to include taste imagery. The more we looked at the poem I realized that people could interpret in a multitude of ways. For example, Ian's table concluded that at the end of the poem that the speaker commits suicide while our group thought it to be that depression had taken over the speaker's ability to think.
When we read the article Story versus Literature by Pullman I agreed with him that literature can go into a character's mind and make us feel what they are feeling. While a film can only express the basic plot line of a story. The Golden Compass was a good example to illustrate his point because the movie was much different than the book. After looking at the example of a essay that scored a nine I found it much easier to write my introduction to the poem of the week essay for I felt a Funeral in My Brain by Emily Dickinson.
